(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For some, getting food delivered via DoorDash is a convenience, but for others, it's a necessity.
Since May 2021, DoorDash has helped the Northern Illinois Food Bank get food to thousands of people who need it.
“Being able to deliver food to our neighbors is a way to reach neighbors that we wouldn't have been able to do before,” said Maeven Sipes, the food bank's Chief Philanthropy Officer.
She said Project DASH has made more than 90,000 deliveries completely free of charge for people facing food insecurity.
“Without that delivery option, they wouldn't have a way to get the food that they need,” Sipes said.
This is important at a time when the food bank is seeing more and more people needing help, she said.
“We're currently serving about 500,000 neighbors every month, which is a 70% increase from pre-pandemic.”
Because of that increase, Sipes says the food bank is hoping to expand the delivery program.
