(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A South Side native who walked away from gang life is hoping to inspire other Chicagoans through her story and her Jamaican fusion food.

Lakisha Hunter is the founder and owner of That Jerk Spot, which deploys food trucks around Chicago.

The business, which includes a catering component, dates back to 2017.

While in high school Hunter said she had to make a choice: remain in a South Side street gang or follow her food dreams.

"Was that an easy decision? No. But I was great at culinary, and culinary was my way out," she told the Noon Business Hour on Friday. "I feel as a leader now in the community to step up and help, like people helped me when I was younger."

Hunter said her goals include expanding her business and inspiring young entrepreneurs.
