(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A piece of aviation history is at the Waukegan Airport this weekend.
The Ford Tri-Motor, built in 1929, was part of the first transcontinental air service.
“It took 48 hours from New York to L.A. — most of which was on a train,” Steve Alright of the Experimental Aircraft Association said.
That’s right. The plane that seats 11 was put on trains for part of the cross-country journey. It cost $1,500 back then.
Modern-day air enthusiasts can fly on the airplane for much less: $77. Bookings are at flytheford.org.
