(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A western suburb is "all lit up" this holiday season.

John Cunningham and Rob Sall led a community effort to wrap as many trees as they could in Forest Park with Christmas lights.

“Literally bought every light at every Home Depot in all of Chicagoland, and we ended up buying 1,600 boxes of lights,” Sall said.

That's what they did after Christmas last year to prepare the community effort in Forest Park for this year's Christmas

“And hauled all of these lights home and we stored them for the entire year. And then basically, once we kicked it off this year, we sort of basically resold all of those lights at that discounted price to neighbors to get them to, you know, be able to get cheap lights.

“We can turn this into a big thing for Forest Park, and here we are, here we are.”

Dozens of trees wrapped in thousands of lights transforming Forest Park into the village of lights.

Resident Jen likes the results.

“We're happy to participate and it looks like, you know, a lot of the community participated as well. And it makes the holiday season extra special.”

So does 8-year-old Patrick.

“Pretty fun how the neighborhood, like, kind of worked together to build these lights and just put them up in the trees. It's just like a really beautiful tradition,” he said.
