COOK COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Earth Day is approaching, and dozens of Cook County residents got a jump start on going green this weekend.

For the second straight year, the Trash Bash was held in the western suburbs.

Joanna Huyck is a volunteer program coordinator with the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

She supervised the event at Miller Meadow in the Forest Preserves near Roosevelt and 1st Avenue. People dropped off old electronics, bicycles, vinyl records, water filters, and even prescription medicine.

“We’d love to offer additional options next year, kind of listening to attendee feedback as well of seeing what things people would like to recycle that they weren’t able to recycle here today,” Huyck said.

Emily King is with SCARCE, a nonprofit based in west suburban Addison that participated in the event.

“People do have things in their basements, and they’re sitting there, and there’s a better home for them than a landfill,” King said. “We like to refer to any item as a resource, if you think about it. Everything that we use is made from something that came from the planet…If we reframe this idea of trash or garbage as resources, then what is the best place for them and how do we get these resources to their highest possible use?”

About 100 people recycled items at this past weekend's Trash Bash.
