(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Matt Rodriguez – the city of Chicago's first Hispanic police superintendent -- has died, the Chicago Police Department announced Wednesday.

Rodriguez started out as a Chicago police officer in 1959 and worked his way up the ranks before Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed him police superintendent in 1992. Rodriguez left the job in 1997.

"Chicago has lost a history maker today," Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a prepared statement. "A pioneer in the field of community policing, he led the department during a critical period, earning the respect of the brave rank-and-file men and women serving in communities throughout the city."

Rodriguez was 87.
