(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A judge in McHenry County has just found a former child welfare caseworker guilty of charges tied to the abuse-related death of a 5-year-old Crystal Lake boy in 2019.
Visiting Judge George Strickland on Friday convicted 57-year-old Carlos Acosta of endangering the life of a minor, for not doing enough to prevent the death of A.J. Freund. Prosecutors claimed Acosta had sufficient evidence to remove Freund from the family home before his death.
The judge found Acosta's former supervisor at the Department of Children and Family Services, Andrew Polovin, not guilty, but criticized him for not drawing better conclusions that could have saved the boy's life.
"You weren't supervising anything. You clearly weren't doing any critical thinking," the judge said.
Freund's parents are both behind bars for the boy's death.
