ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The site of a former hospital in Elgin could find new life as a school.
Board members of Elgin Area School District U-46 have approved a non-binding letter of intent and said they are studying the 14-acre property of the former Sherman hospital.
This comes after Elgin voters recently approved $179 million to help replace five elementary schools.
Board member Melissa Owens has reservations about the plan but still voted in favor of moving forward.
"I do believe it's in our best interest to go through the feasibility and do our due diligence in the property," she said.
Elgin Area School District U-46 is expected to share an update about the property in the coming weeks.
