(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The former chief of staff to onetime Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has been indicted on charges of lying to a federal grand jury.
A federal grand jury indicted Timothy Mapes of Springfield on perjury and attempted obstruction of justice charges in connection with the ongoing bribery probe involving ComEd.
Mapes, 66, is accused of repeatedly lying when he was asked in March about the relationship between Madigan and close associate Michael McClain.
McClain has already been charged with spearheading the alleged bribery scheme on behalf of ComED to win Madigan's help with passing state legislation.
Madigan has not been charged with any wrongdoing. He resigned his seat in the Illinois House and his chairmanship of the Illinois Democratic Party.
“This is clearly a pretty far-reaching investigation,” said State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, D-Chicago, who helped launch that harassment allegations that eventually cost Mapes his job. “They’re gonna get where they’re gonna get, and the sooner they do, the sooner we get to put it in our rear view mirror.”
“This is more than just a few bad apples. This is a culture that has been created here,” said State Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, said. “A culture that we share responsibility for maintaining.”
Federal prosecutors say an arraignment date has not been set for Mapes.
