(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A former suburban police official says the continuing number of mass shootings in the area is a strong argument for curbing assault weapons.

Tom Weitzel was police chief and, before that, a longtime police officer in west suburban Riverside.

He cites a report that by the FBI's measure, there have been at least 68 mass shootings across the U.S. this year alone. It's not just Chicago where such violence is happening. Weitzel notes more than 20 people were shot at a recent gathering in Willowbrook.

The retired police chief says no one can convince him that people in the general public should be able to own AR 15's or other assault rifles. Only the military and maybe law enforcement should have them, he said.

Many gun advocates agree with him, but some are afraid to say so publicly, Weitzel says.

Policing in Chicago and the suburbs is the topic of “At Issue,” which will air 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
