(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Expansion is planned for a program that offers free college tuition to some CPS students at five high schools on Chicago’s South and West sides.
Six more colleges and universities are joining Hope Chicago’s efforts.
Dominican, Elmhurst, Lewis and Roosevelt universities as well as Lake Forest and Trinity Christian colleges join a list of 23 others in-state where the privately funded Hope Scholars program pays expenses such as tuition, book fees and room and board.
Chief Program Officer Michele Howard said it’s part of a promise made to 4,000 students two years ago.
“We’re incredibly excited about the progress that we’ve made in just a short amount of time,” Howard said.
The program also helps students who are often first-generation college-goers and their parents to navigate the admissions process. They are paired with “success coaches” at Benito Juarez, Al Raby, Morgan Park, Johnson College Prep and Farragut high schools.
