Brookfield Zoo welcomed Asali, a female klipspringer whose name means "honey" in Swahili. The klipspringer was born in December 2020 at Lincoln Park Zoo. Zoo visitors can see Asali at the zoo's Habitat Africa! The Savannah.
This transfer is based on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Klipspringer Species Survival Plan (SSP), a cooperative population management and conservation program for accredited North American zoos and aquariums. After analyzing data, experts determined that Asali was a good match with Yukon, a 4-year-old male, who arrived at Brookfield Zoo in 2019. Now, 26 klipspringers live at nine accredited zoos in North America, including the two at Brookfield Zoo.
Klipspringers fans can help the Brookfield Zoo by joining the Animal Adoption program. For $35, a recipient receives the Basic Package, which includes a 5-inch x 7-inch color photograph of a klipspringer, a personalized certificate of adoption, a klipspringer fact sheet, a program decal and an invitation to the exclusive 2022 Animal Adoption summer event. An SSP is a cooperative population management and conservation program for select species in accredited North American zoos and aquariums. Each plan manages the breeding of a species to maintain a healthy and self-sustaining population that is both genetically diverse and demographically stable for the long-term future.
