Brookfield Zoo visitors can now see a South American tapir calf, as the 2-month-old explores his outdoor habitat at the Pachyderm House. The calf's mother Sorghum will be supervising the young calf.
A unique fact about baby tapirs is they are born with the stripes, but after a few months, the stripes will begin to fade, and by the time the calf in 6-months old, the stripes will be completely gone. Currently, the zoo's calf weighs about 70 pounds but could weigh up to 500 pounds when he reaches his full size.
Zoo fans can help care for this calf and other animals through the Animal Adoption program. For $35, participants will receive a 5 x 7 photograph, a personalized adoption certificate, a fact sheet, a decal and an invitation to an exclusive summer event.
