Gas grill sparks massive fire at far NW suburban home

HAMPSHIRE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Fire caused by a gas grill resulted in extensive damage to a home in far northwest suburban Hampshire Monday afternoon.

The fire department said the initial call was for a grill on fire on the rear deck of a home on the 800 block of Elm Street.

While firefighters were on the way, they reported being able to see a large column of smoke. They called for more help before arriving.  When they got there,  they found heavy fire.

The fire had spread from the propane grill, up the siding and into the attic of the two-story home.

There was initially confusion about whether the residents were out. It was thought one person was trapped.

While they searched in heavy smoke, they learned both residents got out safely.

The fire was under control in about 40 minutes.

Firefighters were able to salvage several of the occupants' belongings. Damage is estimated at about $100,000.

A resident and a police officer were treated for smoke inhalation.
