WILMETTE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Police in the north suburbs are warning people pumping gas to keep their keys with them. Or better yet, lock the doors.
Wilmette Police said in a social media post over the last couple of weeks, there has been an increase in car thefts from North suburban gas stations. Offenders are targeting unlocked vehicles while the victims are pumping gas or are inside the convenience store.
Glenview Police detailed one such incident.
The owner of a Mercedes was getting gas at a Costco on Patriot Boulevard Wednesday night at about 11:50.
Someone wearing a ski mask hopped in and started pulling away. The owner was injured trying to get in the passenger door.
The car was last seen speeding east on I-94.
