CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicagoans will get a chance to view one of the best meteor showers of the year Monday night.

Chicagoans are going to want to bundle up and head outside Monday night for the stargazing event of the year: hundreds of bright yellow meteors lighting up the sky.

The Geminid Meteor Shower started last month, but it’s peak is expected over the next 48 hours - Dec. 13 and 14 - producing up to 120 meteors per hour.

According to NASA, the shower is one of the best and most reliable of the year, known for its bright, fast, and abundant meteors. The Geminids are caused by asteroid debris and radiate from a point in the constellation Gemini.

NASA said the best time to see shooting stars will be when the radiant is highest in the sky around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The meteor shower is expected to continue after its peak, lasting until Dec. 24.

A live stream of the shower’s peak can also be viewed on the NASA Meteor Watch Facebook page starting at 8 p.m.
