GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ahalya Lettenberger was born with a musculoskeletal disorder called arthrogryposis amyoplasia.

“It causes muscle in my legs to be replaced by tissue, so in my ankles, I can’t move them at all, my knees I can only bend to about 90 degrees and my hips are dislocated,” Lettenberger told CBS 2 during a 2019 interview.

The Glenbard West High School graduate found her passion in swimming and earned a silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle during the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships.

Now, she has her sights set on gold.

Lettenberger will represent Team USA and make her debut in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

The 20-year old posted on social media that this is a dream come true.

“Honestly I don’t think this will ever sink in. I’m so incredibly thankful for all the support from my family, friends, teammates, and coaches, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without any of you. Can’t wait for an amazing summer with an incredible team! Go USA!”

Lettenberger currently attends Rice University in Houston where she is a bioengineering and pre-med major.
