(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Authorities on Wednesday recognized the heroic efforts of a Grayslake resident, months after he saved a choking motorist.
What started out as a normal February day for Griffin Rebecca quickly turned into something extraordinary.
"I saw a woman outside of her car, on the road, and I could tell something was going on; she was in trouble,” Rebecca said.
The motorist was choking.
"I ran up to her and started performing the Heimlich maneuver on her,” the Good Samaritan said. “And after some time, finally something came up and I could tell a lot of relief happened."
The 31-year-old was so busy saving the woman’s life he didn’t notice her large dog was biting his leg.
"I didn't realize it until after the fact, and so I kind of ran away, at that point, from the dog."
Because of his outstanding efforts, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office presented Griffin with the Citizen Heroism Award.
"I'm getting an award, but I think the police officers and law enforcement and people who are constantly doing things like this on a day-to-day basis should get all the recognition in the world."
