CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - City leaders have approved partial demolition of the Thompson Center.

Permits to demolish the exterior and atrium of the 17-story structure at 100 W. Randolph have been approved by the City, making way for a $6 million project. That is all part of the larger $280 million effort from Google to remodel the former state government building into the company’s Chicago headquarters.

First reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the move signals that the renovation project will soon get under way. One official told the paper there are no concerns about the energy efficiency of the building’s current non-insulate windows.
