(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Taxpayers will benefit from the new election-year budget that Illinois Democratic legislators have agreed upon.

Governor Pritzker called it a responsible, compassionate budget. Under the plan, if you make less than $200,000 a year individually you’ll be getting a $50 check from the state of Illinois and $100 per child. It’s part of a nearly $2 billion tax relief package.

The plan freezes for six months the state’s gasoline tax at 39 cents a gallon. It was supposed to rise with inflation starting July 1.

There will also be a break at the grocery store. The budget plan eliminates the state’s 1% grocery store tax for a year.

There would also be property tax rebates. Even after that, the budget plan puts a billion dollars in the state’s rainy-day fund.

The Illinois Senate’s top Republican leader Dan McConchie called the budget plan a disingenuous gimmick.
