CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Four Walmart stores in Chicago are closing their doors today. The non-profit group My Block My Hood My City held a giveaway until 2 p.m. to help feed people who will lose access to a rare source of fresh food.
Founder Jahmal Cole and about 20 My Block My Hood My City staffers loaded up cars with boxes of food as they pulled into the parking lot of the Walmart at 83rd and Stewart.
The boxes contained items like chicken, spaghetti, and fresh produce and were gone in less than two hours.
"People are very grateful. Right now, people feel like they're abandoned," Cole said. "They feel discarded. The feel neglected".
The non-profit used its partner Top Box.
"We already deliver groceries to seniors, but we had to expand the program to help meet this immediate need," Cole said.
Cole wants Walmart to donate the space to his organization-saying he doesn’t want to see another abandoned building in his neighborhood.
