CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Severe weather prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue a ground stop at both O’Hare and Midway Airports on Monday.

According to the FAA, air traffic that was headed for O’Hare Airport would not be allowed to depart until 2:45 p.m. Air traffic that was headed for Midway Airport would not be allowed to depart until 3 p.m.

The ground stop came after the National Weather Service (NWS) placed several Chicago suburbs under severe thunderstorm warnings.

NWS officials said the storms could carry wind gusts up to 60 mph. Quarter-sized hail was also possible.
