Advocacy group expects to be busy as migrants hit their 60-day limit at shelters

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – One of the organizations that's helping migrants settle into Chicago apartments is gearing up for what they predict will be a "massive move-out day" in about a month, as families have to leave shelters.

There are almost 15,000 migrants in shelters in Chicago. About six weeks ago, a few thousand were given notice that they had to be out in 60 days.

"I predict Feb. 1 -- a massive move-out day,” says Andre Gordillo. “And my team will have to get on it and move them out."

He is director of the New Vecinos program at New Life Centers. Staff and volunteers move people and help them get settled in permanent housing.

Gordillo says the organization has hired more than 30 new people and will be getting more trucks. They have doubled the size of their warehouse on the West Side.

"We'd love to be able to do more,” he said. “Sometimes I just have two chairs, and it's a family of four. And it's not the best look, but we're trying our best to give them something to their name."

At least 17 buses of new migrants were expected over the past two days.
