(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Local environmental organizations are inviting Chicago residents to get rid of their leftover Halloween pumpkins sustainably.

"Don't trash it -- smash it!" That is the annual theme of the pumpkin smashing events.

The nonprofit School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education, or SCARCE, is organizing more than 60 sites in the Chicago area.

The event diverts pumpkins from landfills in an effort to reduce waste as residents begin to dispose of Halloween decorations.

Chicago pumpkin smashes will take place Nov. 4 and 5. Most will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon, but timing changes based on neighborhood.
