(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group that touts dog meat is getting attention and turning heads overseas while trying to change minds everywhere.
Molly Elwood of Elwood’s Organic Dog Meat was at a recent vegan event in Grant Park.
She and her colleagues told WBBM with tongue-in-cheek, that "we're a local organic dog meat farm. We're right outside the city, we raise organic Corgis, Labradors, Yorkies. Dog meats from dogs, for people."
Elwood, who has a background in standup comedy, keeps people guessing for a moment or two when she discusses her organization which does not really sell dog meat or harm any dogs in any way.
The purpose of Elwood's is to get people to be outraged at the thought of eating dogs and so, she hopes, they'll also think twice about the animals they actually eat.
"People...(told me) 'you should tell vegan jokes' and I was like 'there's nothing funny about veganism' and then I found it, it's dog meat," Elwood said.
"We try and say 'these animals are for eating, and these animals are not for eating' when in fact dogs are dumber than pigs, so I don't understand what the problem is. We have had a lot of people come up (to their booth at the Vegandale event in Grant Park) and been angry."
Elwood's Organic Dog Meat has just launched an ad campaign on the London underground Tube and they got kicked off Instagram, apparently because the platform does not understand what Elwood is really doing.
Elwood said the whole thing can be considered a thought experiment.
"We talk about the ways we treat our animals and what's the difference between the ones we put on our plates and the ones we let sleep on our beds, so we're having having these conversations and we want more people to be disturbed...in order to have the experience of what it's like to be a vegan."
