(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Election day is still a week away, but there's already some political back-and-forth between the campaigns for Illinois governor about accepting the results.

Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker's campaign manager sent a letter to his counterpart on Darren Bailey's team asking for the Republican to publicly commit to accepting the results of next week's election.

In the letter to Jose Durbin, Mike Ollen wrote in part, "Election denialism is a dark plague that threatens the very foundation of our democracy. In this time of unparalleled division, it is important we as campaign leaders, along with our candidates, promise to respect Illinoisans’ wishes.”

In email to WBBM Newsradio, Bailey's communications director, Joe DeBose, called the letter a "sad and desperate attempt from the campaign of a failing Governor."

He went on to say Bailey will accept the election outcome.

DeBose added: “The real question is, will J.B. pledge not to remove the toilets from the Governor’s mansion once he loses?”

That’s a reference to a controversy involving the removal of toilets from a Pritzker home as part of a property tax appeal.
