(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois State Police have hosted a third and final public hearing regarding a new firearms registration requirement and there is growing frustration among the owners of what the state considers to be “assault weapons.”
There have been complaints that the law is vague and that the list of guns and attachments requiring registration – among 85 pages on the State Police website - is confusing.
“I know which ones need to be registered when it’s specific, not a type of firearm, but that specific firearm. I have lots of questions about what appendages have to be (registered),” Republican State Senator Terri Bryant said.
Ed Sullivan with the State Rifle Association, questioned why any gun owner would comply.
“People will think that maybe this is a tinfoil hat response,” Sullivan said. “But registration is always in the history of the world led to confiscation.”
Former Republican State Senator Darren Bailey, now running for congress, told CBS 3 in Champaign he’s not going to comply.
Failure to register, under the law, would be a misdemeanor for the first offense and then a class 3 felony.
The registration deadline is January 1.
