HAMMOND, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The football program at a high school in Hammond has been placed on probation, because of how an assistant coach tried to recruit players from another school.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association placed Morton High School's football program on probation until next summer, and Assistant Coach Henry Johnson has been suspended for six weeks.

The association ruled Johnson improperly sent messages to players from another high school to persuade to them to transfer to Morton and play football there.

The IHSAA also reprimanded Morton's head football coach, Mac Mishler, for allowing two players who transferred to Morton to take part in summer workouts without completing a report that the association requires.

Morton's athletic director told the Times of Northwest Indiana the school accepts the consequences, but had no comment beyond that.
