(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hammond, Indiana Mayor Thomas McDermott acknowledges he smoked marijuana in Chicago and says if he's elected to the U.S. Senate next year he'll be an advocate for legalizing recreational pot.
The Democrat said if he would have admitted to smoking marijuana 10 years ago he would have been run out of town but that today it's different.
He made the comments this week on his podcast, Left of Center, and recounted attending a Dead and Company show at Wrigley Field.
"By the way, I was there two nights. I have a ride there and from. I'm in a state where it's legal. Two Grateful Dead shows. So, yeah, I did, why not?
"It was a weird sensation for me to be there, literally, right by the Chicago Cubs dugout and seeing people just straight-up smoking weed. It was awesome."
McDermott said Indiana, a farm state, is behind on legal marijuana and missing out on tax revenue and economic development.
