(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. made headlines earlier this week for remarks he made about the Crown Point albino deer, which was euthanized after being hit by a car.

McDermott questioned how a story about the deer in the Times of Northwest Indiana had a front-page banner headline. In the same edition, there was a story about a joke letter McDermott received, purportedly from the Royal Family, telling him he was banned from the United Kingdom for remarks he made about the Princess of Wales.

“I think a mayor of 20 years should trump the albino deer, OK?” he said. “I think I should have been above the fold.”

McDermott was on his Left of Center Podcast on Friday with co-host Kevin Smith.

“Some stupid white deer is trumping me?” he said.

The Times followed up with a story headlined “McDermott jeers ‘stupid deer,’” which the mayor shared to his Facebook page.

He wrote: “I love albino deer, they taste amazing.”

McDermott, though, added: “In all seriousness, condolences to the residents of Crown Point. It's sad to see an animal everybody loved so much lose [its] life.”
