Hantavirus vaccine and treatment in the works

The push is on to fully develop a Hantavirus vaccine and treatment.
TENERIFE, SPAIN - MAY 10: Passengers are evacuated by small boat from the MV Hondius in the Granadilla Port on May 10, 2026 in Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands, Spain. The cruise ship MV Hondius, which had three passengers die from Hantavirus last month and eight more reported cases, is expected to arrive on Sunday May 10 in Tenerife, where the remaining passengers will be repatriated to their respective countries. At a press conference this week, representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the outbreak of this rare virus did not constitute a pandemic, but it has stirred anxieties in the Canary Islands and elsewhere.

CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) - As global public health officials now scramble to contain the highly infectious hantavirus, seen recently transmitted from person to person on a cruise ship, the Wall Street Journal reports that there are already a number of potential vaccine or treatment options awaiting human trial.

One option is an antibody which has shown to protect hamsters from the Andes strain in question, the results first published in 2022, but an international consortium of researchers are still in need of funding to proceed any further. This includes researchers from universities, biotech companies, and a U.S. military research institute.

Moderna has been working on a vaccine for the hantavirus since 2024, in a collaboration with the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.
