(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A suspect has turned himself in after allegedly robbing a west suburban Walgreens store armed with a hatchet, authorities say.
Jason Zell, 32, of Carol Stream on Wednesday was ordered held on $300,000 bond after he was charged with one count of armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, a Class X felony, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.
Zell allegedly went into a Walgreens store around 9 p.m. Jan. 16 and acted as if he was trying to purchase an item at checkout. When the clerk opened the cash register, Zell pulled a hatchet from his backside and reached around a barrier to grab money from the register, authorities said.
Two nights later, Zell reportedly flagged down a Wheaton police officer and turned himself in.
"The allegation against Mr. Zell, that he brandished a hatchet at the store clerk who was just trying to make an honest living and stole hundreds of dollars, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.
Zell's next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 11.
