BENSENVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The superintendent of Fenton High School District 100 in Bensenville has been placed on administrative leave over allegations of sexual abuse made against a former teacher.

Superintendent James Ongtengco has been under pressure to resign for weeks from the mayor as well as students and parents.

Many believe he looked the other way as a now-fired teacher allegedly sexually abused students. The allegations date back years.

Sara Guerrero, a student, was among those speaking during a Friday night board meeting.

"While the superintendent stepping down may be a step in the right direction, it is not enough," she stated. "You must be transparent about your plans to investigate this situation further."

Board President Cary Lewis and Vice-President Juliet Rago addressed the crowd.

"This decision required careful consideration to address the situation that has weighed heavily on our hearts and minds," Lewis said.

"Let me assure you, we are all sickened and gutted by the allegations made against the former staff member," Rago added.

Principal Samuel Bentsen is now the interim superintendent.

"My priority is maintaining positive learning environment – even through this most difficult situation."

The former teacher at the center of this has not been charged with a crime. He is currently under investigation.
