The weather is getting nicer, a lot of us are spending more time outdoors…and that’s prompting a reminder from health officials.
Beware of those pesky ticks.
“Ticks are in Illinois, they are in DuPage County. We know that. They spread disease through biting, they feed through blood.”
Matt Fullam is an Environmental Health Program Manager with the DuPage County Health Department.
He says the biggest way to steer clear of ticks, which are most active between April and September, is to avoid them.
“Tall grass, brush areas, obviously if you’re out in the forest preserves, where people love to be this time of year, that’s an area where you’re going to find ticks.”
If you do venture out, Fullam recommends insect repellent and bright colored clothing to easily spot the tiny ticks.
And for those who may fall victim to a bite?
“Get some tweezers as close to your skin as possible so that you’re getting the tick by the head. Just do a nice, smooth pull so you’re getting them out.”
Then keep an eye on the area and alert your doctor.
