(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This past weekend’s heavy rainfall across parts of Illinois was a welcome sign for a weather expert in the state.

Trent Ford, Illinois State Climatologist based at the University of Illinois, calls the past few months of rain patterns in the Chicago area “a complicated mess.”

“What we saw this last weekend was several series of storms move through the area, the heaviest of which was in the McHenry, Lake and Northern Cook County area,” he said. “Some places, between Evanston and Waukegan, picked up six to seven inches of rain in just a matter of hours.”

He said that was especially good news for counties dealing with flash drought conditions.

“What this rain has done is put a good amount of water back into the soil. This next week here is going to be on the cool side, which is great, but once we do ramp up the heat again in August, that’ll give a little buffer for them.”

However, Ford expects August to be a relatively warm and dry month, so despite all that rain, he said drought difficulties may be far from over.
