Helpful reminders from Chicago OEMC as temperatures expected to plummet this weekend

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The Office of Emergency Management and Communications and other city officials are issuing reminders to residents amid the weekend's winter storm.

OEMC officials said they're working with various departments to support residents and provide resources for those who need it.

Dr. Simbo Ige with the Chicago Department of Public health encourages residents to check in on family and friends.

"If you have older ones, loved ones, people with disability, we want you to reach out and check in on them. simply ask, 'do you have heat? are you doing okay? do you need help?," she advised.

"That makes a world of difference in situations like this."

Matt Baudet with the Department of Buildings reminds residents how to properly take care of their pipes.

"Please make sure there is heat going through your buildings and your homes. That prevents your pipes from freezing," he explained.

"Run a little water every now and then on all the fixtures, so you have a water flow in the pipes and the pipes will not burst."

He also advised not to use stoves or ovens to heat homes and said that landlords must follow the Chicago heat ordinance.

The ordinance requires the temperature in residential buildings to be 68 degrees from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. and 66 degrees from 10:30 p.m.-8:30 a.m.

Landlords face fines up to $500-$1,000 per day for each offense if they do not provide heat.
