HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A poverty simulation event in Highland Park, that was called off following social media backlash, got a hearing Monday night during a meeting of the city council even though it wasn't on the agenda.

The announcement about the poverty simulation that was to be held at the Highland Park Country Club raised more than a few eyebrows.

It should be noted that what’s called the “Country Club” is actually a senior center and meeting rooms.

Resident Suzy Wahl was among those critical of the event.

"What we want from you: number one, a public apology to your residents   and anyone offended by your attempt at poverty cosplay,” Wahl said.

Another resident, Ashbey Beasley, begged to differ.

"We should not be sitting here and criticizing these efforts. This program has been renowned across the country," argued Beasley.

She said the organizations behind the program, including The Alliance of Human Services, promote understanding and awareness.

They did it in Lake Forest, she said, and no one had a problem with it.
