HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Highland Park’s plans to construct a permanent memorial for victims of the 2022 parade shooting have gotten a boost from a private donor.
Highland Park native Jon Gray and his wife Mindy are donating one million dollars to the permanent memorial. The city announced the donation is the first private funds given to its efforts to build a space for remembrance and reflection on the shooting that killed seven people.
"Today, we are lifted by the kindness of former Highland Park resident Jon Gray and his wife Mindy," Mayor Nancy Rotering said in a statement.
"Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this generous gift that will help us create a permanent place of remembrance, a critical part of our community’s long-term resiliency.”
Gray said said he grew up not far from where the "devastating tragedy occurred" and he has "cherished memories of decorating my bike to participate in the July 4th parade."
The temporary memorial is at the Rose Garden adjacent to City Hall located 707 St. Johns Ave.
An online giving portal for those who would like to make a donation to the permanent memorial is available at hpremembrance.org.
