HINSDALE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Parents in Hinsdale Township High School District 86 had plenty of questions Monday night during a special meeting after a student was found in possession of a loaded gun last week at Hinsdale South High School.
Parents wanted to know how a student showed up for school smelling of marijuana, at 8 a.m., and was not searched and a gun was not found until three hours later.
“He’s not going to be in the right frame of mind if someone just bullies him,” one parent said. “At any point, he could have just pulled out that gun and done whatever he wanted to do.”
The parents were told the school resource officer was in training that morning. Metal detectors were also brought up.
“Several parents have called me and asked that the weapon detection system is deployed much more regularly or fulltime,” another parent said at the meeting. “Several parents have also called me and said they don’t want that to happen because they are worried about the implications
“They worried about a ‘police state.’”
The student, a 16-year-old boy, is charged with two felonies. He’s in juvenile detention.
