CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For those traveling this Thanksgiving, you can expect Chicago’s airports to be packed.

Security lines and bag checks at O’Hare International Airport continue to grow as we head into some of the busiest travel days of the year.

Chicago Department of Aviation spokeswoman Christine Carrino told WBBM Nesradio Thanksgiving travel is expected to be near pre-pandemic levels.

“About 1.2 million people will pass through O’Hare International Airport between Tuesday and next Monday and an additional 288,000 will pass through Midway International Airport so it’s going to be busy,” Carrino said.

With more than two and a half times the number of Thanksgiving travelers since last year, the CDA has reminded people to give themselves extra time to get through those longer lines.

“Give yourself plenty of time,” said Carrino. “We’ve been saying it for years, but it’s more important than ever now.”

One way to reduce congestion at Chicago’s airports is by taking the CTA or at O’Hare, parking in the economy lot and riding the recently reopened ‘people mover’.

“We’re actually extending hours during this busy Thanksgiving week,” said Carrino. “We’ll operate from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily during the Thanksgiving holiday.”

Those traveling with kids are encouraged to take advantage of the Chicago Airports activity and coloring book.

It’s free and can be downloaded online or picked up at the information desk.
