(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Price increases at the grocery store are starting to level off. Even so, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates across the board food prices will go up by 1.3%.

One way to save money at the grocery store is to grow food in your backyard.

Late May is the perfect time to plant a variety of fruits and vegetables, according to Chester Jankowski of the Chicago Botanic Garden.

“Warm season, solanaceous crops such as tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, watermelon — all the things that really love the hot, hot heat,” he said. “Getting them into the ground now while the soil’s warm, which we know the soil’s warm because our cicada friends are out, it’ll be the perfect time.”

If you pick produce from the garden, he said, you don't have to buy it at the grocery store. The cost savings will eventually add up.
