CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A homeless man who died in March after he was allegedly beaten by a CTA employee had a number of drugs in his system and died primarily of an overdose.

The conclusion of the Medical Examiner’s Office is that Kevin Powell, 54 died of a drug overdose with “stress” from the beating a secondary cause.

The CTA worker, Emmet Richardson, 39 is charged right now with felony aggravated battery.

Prosecutors said the prolonged beating after Powell was found sleeping in his wheelchair in the LaSalle Street Blue Line Stop, was captured on surveillance video.

Powell was punched, dragged around the station and was pushed down stairs, according to prosecutors. They also said he did not defend himself.

He died at the station. The ME’s office said he had heroin, cocaine, fentanyl and xylazine in his system.
