(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city has dialed back demands that tents in an encampment in the Fulton Market neighborhood be removed, after plans were made for a protest.

The city had put notices on the 10 orange tents under the “El” tracks at Clinton, Fulton and Milwaukee that said they had to be moved for cleaning.

This cleaning, which has occurred over the years in other tent camps, is typically met with skepticism by those who live in them. They believe they’re being pushed out.

In this case, it was no different. The city says it’s about garbage and rodent control, not displacing the people.

A protest was planned.

Andy Robledo, who provides the re-purposed ice-fishing tents, wrote on Instagram: “ … we stand with our neighbors living on the streets to face off against city crews using antiquated ordinances and tone deaf policy that puts peoples human rights last.”

The deadline to remove the tents had been Thursday morning. Now, the city says the tents don’t have to be moved.
