Illinois State Police say the horse injured Monday during a rush-hour ride down the Dan Ryan Expressway is improving.
The good news comes as Adam Hollingsworth, the self-styled “Dreadhead Cowboy,” faces an animal cruelty charge and others after he rode his horse, NuNu, for several miles on the roadway, sometimes at a gallop.
"The horse is currently under the care of an equine rescue partner of Chicago Animal Care and Control. She is receiving good care and her condition is improving,” state police said Thursday.
Earlier this week, a Cook County prosecutor said the horse was irrevocably injured from the strain of the event and may have to be euthanized.
Hollingsworth, who is out on bond, disagrees with the most critical assessments of the animal’s health. But he tells WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller that he should have walked the animal more on the roadway and bandaged one of her hooves.
“I’d do it again. But I’d do it in a better way,” Hollingsworth said.
The riding and horse enthusiast says he rode on the Dan Ryan Monday to draw attention to gun violence that affects young people.
