(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The family of a woman from the Joliet area has settled with Silver Cross Hospital more than five years after the woman’s death from a kidney stone, and attorneys say it’s a state record for medical malpractice.
Attorneys for the family Victoria Doyle say Silver Cross failed to treat her with antibiotics when they were needed, even though tests indicated a kidney infection. Doyle, 61, only had one kidney.
Doyle developed severe sepsis and organ failure and died 26 hours after she went to the ER, the attorneys say.
The settlement was for $8 million — the largest settlement amount in Illinois for a medical malpractice and wrongful death lawsuit involving a woman in her 60s, according to her family’s attorneys.
Silver Cross confirms a settlement but declined further comment.
