SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Licensing a trailer in Illinois is expected to cost a lot less money starting next year.
Two years ago there was a good deal of outrage, especially from those who fish and hunt, when lawmakers raised the fee for licensing a trailer from $18 to $118 to help fund road and bridge construction.
There were multiple proposals to reduce it, but until now, there was no agreement on an alternative source of funding.
On Sunday, lawmakers in the House approved a proposal by Rep. Marcus Evans, D-Chicago, to lower the fee to $36.
They also removed a $10,000 cap on sales tax credits for vehicle trade-ins and added $5 for vehicle title transfers, from $150 to $155.
Multiple proposals for lowering the trailer fee were filed this session, including two proposals would have brought the fee back to $18. Both were held up over finding alternative sources of construction funding.
Under the bill, individuals could keep their same license plate and simply renew it.
