(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thursday's potentially record-setting heat comes as high school football teams can play their first games and other sports have already begun.
However, the excessive heat has prompted many high schools, including all in Chicago Public Schools to postpone outdoor games. An expert offers suggestions on how to keep cool.
Mike Overturf, director of athletic training services at Athletico Physical Therapy, stresses it's important to stay hydrated by drinking water or sports drinks with electrolytes.
Teams should use misting fans to help players lower their body temperatures.
Overturf said football coaches should consider practicing without full pads and helmets if it's too hot.
Illinois High School Association guidelines suggest teams take water breaks every 30 minutes and use ice to cool down towels.
Overturf said times like this is when having a trainer who knows the players well pays off.
"Knowing your student athletes really comes into play, because you know your athletes that are potentially pre-disposed to heat illnesses as well and that's key for the athletic trainers."
In addition to hydration, he said getting the right kind of food and amount of sleep are important in recovery and injury prevention.
