CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The City of Chicago has announced plans to work with several community groups to provide essential supplies this winter to people in need.

The focus will be on collecting donations of money, winter coats, shoes, warm clothing, and other essential items.

Chicago officials said the need for such donations has grown "increasingly critical."

City leaders said the need is partly due to the arrival of more than 19,000 asylum-seeking migrants in Chicago since August 2022.

The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless said there are also more than 68,000 people in the city who are experiencing homelessness.

Those interested in making donations can see where their nearest donation site is located on the City's website. The website also contains information about how to volunteer as the City works to support residents in need.
