How to get Black Friday travel deals before they fly off the shelf: 'Not the time to lollygag'

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — You can do much more than get a great deal on appliances and electronics on Black Friday and Cyber Monday; the holiday weekend is also full of massive deals on flights, hotels and cruises.

Former TV host and current travel blogger Juliet Huddy joined the WBBM Noon Business Hour to discuss the trend. She said ever since COVID, Americans have started choosing experiences over material things.

"We were stuck inside for two years during COVID," she said. "Seeing the country, seeing the world — it's not guaranteed. The travel industry knows this, so in general, they're a lot more willing these days to offer great deals now to secure your loyalty later, and this upcoming holiday weekend is hands-down the absolute best time to snag a deal."

The key to making sure you don't miss out on the savings: Do your homework, Huddy said. Figure out when you want to travel, where you want to go, who you want to travel with and how much you want to spend.

"You've got to be ready to book," she said. "You have to have your credit card out, and you've got to be ready to go because the deals are flying off the shelves."

Huddy added: "This is not the time to lollygag."

It's worth noting that there was one area in which Huddy recommended taking your time: the fine print. As great as it feels to click "book" on a big deal, she said "the worst feeling" is not getting your money back if you have to cancel your plans.

One more thing: Huddy said being flexible can help ensure that you get the best deal. That's partially due to the fact that many travel businesses offer discounted fares and rates during slow periods on their schedule.
