(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Knowledge is power and don’t lose your power to utility scammers!
Colder temperatures and the holiday season are prime times for fraudsters who threaten both consumers and businesses with utility shut-offs. The fear of losing lights or heat may trigger a fast response before you have time to think.
There are some great ways to detect con artists masquerading as representatives from a utility company. Utility companies will never call you, threatening a shut-off and demanding payment.
Hang up and contact the utility company directly if there is ever a question about your bill.
Be on high alert if someone claiming to be from the gas or electric company calls or shows up at your door unsolicited with special savings plans or asks to come inside.
